Created on December 14, 2020 by presidential decree, the National Mining Company (Sonamines) has its first general manager. This is Serge Hervé Boyogueno. He was appointed during the first meeting of the company's Board of Directors held on Friday, April 16, 2021.
Serge Hervé Boyogueno, aged 39, will occupy the position of Managing Director of Socamines. Engineer of mines and geology, the very first CEO of this company in charge of the mining sector in Cameroon previously held the position of director of mines at the Ministry of Mines, Industry and Technological Development (Minmidt). Serge Boyogueno is director of the National Hydrocarbons Company (SNH). Before joining the ministry in charge of mines, he was deputy director of the mining cadastre. A profile which can undoubtedly explain the choice made on the latter by the President of the Republic who, through this appointment demonstrates the confidence he places in the youth for the management of the affairs of the country.
By virtue of his youth, this native of Mbam and Inoubou in the Center region plans to highlight his long professional experience to carry out the task which has just been entrusted to him: “the task is immense but we can promise that we will not sleep without take up the slightest challenge that challenges us. The priority of our activities after the structuring of the company is to secure our national gold production, ”he told national television, CRTV.
12 people to turn around the mining sector
The Board of Directors is made up of 12 members. 11 were appointed by the President of the Republic. The personality designated by the President of the Republic is Blaise Moussa. AyemMauger, represents the Presidency of the Republic, Eloundou Jean Pierre, the services of the Prime Minister, MeyengaBitoumou Champlain Serge represents the Ministry of Finance. AgborKarrenOjong will represent the Ministry of Mines, Industry and Technological Development, Abdoul-Aziz Oumarou, Minepat, Paul Tchawa, the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development, Jean Marcel, the Ministry of Scientific Research and innovation, Ambassa Chantal, Mindcaf, DikandaEric Benoît the Ministry of Transport, and Brusil Miranda Martine Metou, the Ministry of Commerce.
Labor can begin
On April 14, 2021, Paul Biya, President of the Republic had already appointed the members of the Board of Directors and of the General Assembly of this structure which will be responsible, among other things, for: the inventory of mining indices in conjunction with other administrations and competent bodies, to carry out exploration and exploitation activities for mineral substances, to ensure the implementation of measures relating to the restoration, rehabilitation and closure of mining sites.
As a reminder, Sonamines is a company with public capital, with the State as sole shareholder. But, specifies the decree of creation, "the shareholding of Sonamines can be opened to other public or private entities". The statutes of this new public company on hold will set its capital as well as the terms of participation in said capital. Sonamines, placed under the supervision of the Ministry in charge of Mines, was created in a context where mining is problematic in Cameroon. Indeed, according to the Support Framework for Mining Handicrafts (Capam), the Cameroonian public treasury loses about one billion FCFA each month due to the concealment of resources produced by mining companies. In addition, according to the Ministry of Mines, only 40% of Cameroon's mining potential is known to the public authorities.
